Odds, Probabilities
The main goal of any poker game is to bag the pot. The bigger the pot, the more would be your winnings. Poker players use different techniques to calculate the odds of bagging the pot. There are various ways and methods to determine the pot odds. The profitability of the pot can be determined by using the pot odds. Odds are nothing but simply the ratio of wins over losses. In other terms, pot odds signify the chances of winning or losing a pot. The odds when converted in a percentage become the probability percentage. The formula to calculate the odds and probabilities of a pot is as follows:
Pot odds = Win / (Win + loss) % probability
For e.g. if the odds are 1 to 4 then the probability of the pot is 1 / (1 + 4) = 20 %
The odds and probabilities of a pot form a major factor in deciding the strategy of the player. When the odds and probabilities of a pot are higher, the players would raise their bet to win more money. The odds and probabilities are nothing but ratios and indicators of the profitability and chances of bagging a pot with different hands and circumstances.
In Texas Holdem, the probability can also be calculated by using direct calculation. There are two major ways in which you can calculate the probabilities for Texas Holdem.
Players can determine the number of possible outcomes of a particular event and divide it by the total possible number of outcomes to find out the probability. For e.g. if players had to pick two cards then they can pick the first card in 52 different ways and the second 51 different ways. This means that there are 52 × 51 ÷ 2 ways i.e. 1326 different ways. In other words, the probability of picking two aces is 6/1326 i.e. 1/221.
